Newsletters

Newsletters can be a fantastic way to engage with your target market. They provide an opportunity for you to engage with your audience while demonstrating your expertise and knowledge of the industry.

Tips for writing and sending a newsletter to your email database

  • Write useful information. Newsletters that are too sales-focused or self-promotional will read like junk mail and have people reaching for the 'delete' key.
  • Don't confuse newsletters with special offer catalogues. Your clients won't.
  • If you are in a constantly changing industry, use your newsletter to keep customers and prospects up to date. They will appreciate that you have done the hard work for them.
  • Avoid plagiarism. Use your own original words to write about a topic.
  • If you've seen an article that you want to use, approach the original author and ask for permission to reproduce it in your newsletter. Most people are happy to share their work, so long as their authorship is acknowledged. Alternatively, write your own opinion on the subject and create a link to the original article for those who want more detailed coverage.
  • Ensure you have obtained consent to email your database contacts. Avoid spam. Visit the Australian Communications and Media Authority anti-spam website pages for more information.
  • If you plan your newsletter frequency and topics ahead of time, you'll avoid sending out two masterpieces followed by many months of silence.
  • Newsletter competitions can be a great way to engage your audience, but make sure you have the appropriate permit in Australia. If it is a game of chance (e.g. a giveaway), a permit is required from the Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing. If the competition is judged, no permit is required.
  • While overt self-promotion is best avoided, a new product or service launch can be newsworthy if you write about it in a 'What's In It For Me?' style.
  • News about fundraising or charity work by your staff can contribute a feel-good factor to your company newsletter and your brand.
